Lieutenant General H.C. (Hank) Stackpole III retired from the Marine Corps on September 1, 1994. His last active duty assignment was as the Commander of Marine Forces Pacific/Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, headquartered at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.

General Stackpole assumed command of Marine Forces Pacific in July 1992 after serving as Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Policies and Operations, Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. He previously commanded Joint Task Force Sea Angel in Bangladesh during humanitarian relief operations in May and June 1991 in the islands and eastern coastal area of the Bay of Bengal.

Early in his career, General Stackpole served as a platoon, company, battalion, and regimental commander, as well as commanding officer of the 17th Marine Amphibious Unit. More recently he served as Deputy Commander, III Marine Amphibious Force/Assistant Division Commander, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan, and as the Director, Plans and Policy Directorate, USCINCLANT, Norfolk, Virginia. He was advanced to the rank of lieutenant general on July 23, 1991.

General Stackpole's career spanned more than 30 years and is characterized by his awards and decorations which include the Silver Star Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart with gold star, the Government of Japan Order of The Rising Sun, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
